CBD for Seizures

Seizures have since for a long time baffled doctors. Now, researchers are baffled with how people are successfully finding a CBD dosage that works for epilepsy and seizures more effectively than conventional medicine. Essentially seizures are kind of short circuit also referred to as an electrical storm in the brain. The predisposing factors for seizures are numerous and seizures can occur for any age range, sex or race without any preference. Seizures may manifest solely as a medical condition or maybe a symptom of an associated disorder. This makes it very difficult to diagnose and also to treat.

Presently, the most widely recognized medications for seizures include anti-epileptic drugs and treatment that have their effects on some regions of the brain via electrical currents. Unfortunately, many types of seizures still remain untreatable.

Recent studies on the therapeutic functions of cannabinoids especially dosing with CBD (Cannabidiol) have proven to be the light at the end of the “untreatable seizure” tunnels. This to a great extent helps to improve the individual’s quality of life.

Medical Research

There have been various studies to show the beneficial effects of dosing with CBD for seizures and its associated disorders.

A notable one is that of which a CBD concentrated cannabis strain, by the name of Charlotte’s Web was coined from the name of a girl, Charlotte who experienced epilepsy. Her seizures were resistant to conventional seizure treatments and surprisingly a strain of cannabis with highly concentrated amounts of CBD relieved the treatment-resistant seizures.

Another critical research is an investigation involving the use of Epidiolex, a medication derived from purified CBD oil extract. A study carried out involving about 214 individuals administered Epidiolex in an absence of placebo control showed impressive statistics over a period of twelve weeks. All the participant in this study had treatment-resistant seizures ranging from about 2 to 26 years. During this period of twelve weeks, most of the individuals that participated noticed their seizure drop by about 54%.

A recent study was carried out to prove the therapeutic effect of CBD. This research was carried out on about 19 children experiencing uncontrollable seizures. The study yielded positive results as an astonishing 80% of the children who participated in this study expressed a reduction in their seizures. Additional, two children experienced a total cessation and eight other children experienced about 80% reduction in the recurrence of the seizures. An extra six members had somewhere in the range of twenty-five to sixty percent achievement. Side effects associated with this CBD treatment were rare, the advantages exceeded the side effect, and however, drowsiness and fatigue were noticed in some patients. These side effects were not profound and as such was not thought to be sufficiently serious to justify ceasing the study. However, the researchers opined that it was important for more study to investigate the beneficial effects in children.

A similar study, although a larger survey involving 192 patients with seizure participating with it. These patients were administered with an extract of CBD oil and observed for about twelve weeks. However, this study was said to be controversial as the patients were all mindful of the treatment so there was no control group. Also, this CBD treatment was also used in addition to other treatments currently being used by some seizure patients. Nonetheless, this provided an insight into the beneficial properties of cannabinoids. In general, the study showed the positive result as about 36.5% of the patients experienced a reduction in seizures and about 2% noticed total cessation.

Cannabinoids / CBD Mechanism of Action

You might begin to wonder, how does CBD effectuate its actions? Surprisingly much of that information is unknown… so why is CBD so effective for epilepsy and seizures?

Seizures are said to originate from the brain. Cannabinoids, for example, cannabidiol (CBD) interacts with cannabinoids receptors that are normally found in the brain. Since the conduction of electrical impulses to the brain was conveyed by neurotransmitters that look like CBD, experts are of the opinion that CBD may work to redress lack of function of the naturally-occurring endocannabinoids inside the brain of individuals experiencing seizures.

The action of CBD depends on the requirements at that point in time. CBD may act to stimulate the release of a neurotransmitter required to enhance the conduction of impulses and on the other hand, may totally block its production… At the end of the day, the research is in its’ infancy to the dismay of researchers wanting to know why it’s so effective!

Conclusion

While initial studies on CBD Dosages have yielded positive results, it has been difficult for researchers to carry out an extensive study because of the many government restrictions.

Presently, cannabis is listed among schedule 1 control substances and as such it is difficult for researchers to get legal consents to carry out large-scale studies that would beneficial to individuals suffering from treatment-resistant seizures. Currently, arguably about 30% of all individuals with seizure doesn’t experience relief with conventional medications. It is in this vein that CBD Dosing as a treatment option comes into play.

In a bid to completely comprehend how a proper CBD dosage can be beneficial in controlling wild seizures, researchers are battling to have the government limitations lifted. For this purpose, individuals experiencing seizures and associated conditions such as epilepsy can only hope the future takes into account the need for more research on CBD’s beneficial uses.
